Learn how to play sus4 and 7sus4 chords!
For a more in depth explanation of the sus4 and 7sus4 chords, check your copy of The Guitar Conspiracy. Below is a brief explanation of the basics:
- The sus4 is found one fret above the major 3rd.
- The 7sus4 is a combination of the dom7 and the sus4 chord.
The great thing about these chords is that they are neither major nor minor since they don’t have a third within them.
This means that you can change most major and minor chords into sus4′s!
When to use sus4 chords
Wonderwall for example use the 7sus4 on the II chord, making it a II7sus4.
Experiment with modifying more chords into sus4 and 7sus4 chords.
The IV and VII chord will not be possible since IV is Lydian (#4) and VII is a chord without a natural 5th.
Also, any chord that has been modified into an ‘X’ chord can be modified into a sus4 or a 7sus4.
To learn more, always check what number the sus4 or 7sus4 chord has in relation to it’s key.
