Run your maj7 chord shapes through the cycle of 4ths!
This exercise will teach your hands the maj7 shapes.
There are two ways you can practice this exercise:
- As in the video; slowly, exploring the sound of each shape.
- One strum per chord, pushing the BPM.
Both ways should be looked into, the quicker you can do it, the better you will be at fretting the maj7 chord shapes.
Cycle of 4ths exercise
Since the chord movement of maj7, up a 4th to a new maj7 is so common (I-IV), it’s a good idea to practice this extensively.
In fact, there would be few songs that didn’t have a “4th up” movement inside it so the same will be true for dom7 and min7.
Practice with the cycle of 4ths
From a practicing point of view, do try other cycles such as: thirds, fifths etc. They all help.
Variation is never a bad idea as long as you stay focused and notate the results you will continue to improve.
What BPM can you play this exercise at? Have you got a practice routine in place?
Do you use the Work Book?
