Creepin' In ChordsRun your dom7 chord shapes through the cycle of 4ths!

This exercise will teach you the dom7 shapes, make sure you know where all the intervals are inside all shapes.

Compared with the min7 and maj7 chords, we get even more places where we are likely to move up a 4th from one dom7 chord to another.

12 Bar Blues

In the key of C: I7 to IV7 is C7 to F7 is 4th, V7 to I7 is a 4th.

IIx to V

Still in the key of C: when the II chord, Dm has been modified into a IIx7 it usually moves up to V7, this would be another dom7, up a 4th to a dom7.

X to X

In some turnarounds you’ll find that they all use x7 chords, a long one would spell:

IIIx7 – VIx7 – IIx7 – V7 – I7. In the key of C this becomes:

E7 – A7 – D7 – G7 – C7

Read more about chords, variations and progressions in The Guitar Conspiracy, it will give you a goal to work towards.

The movement of going “up a 4th” really shines when it comes to dom7 chords, practice extensively!
