Learn how to play Rewind on one Acoustic Guitar!
The strumming pattern of Rewind has to be adopted to the situation.
When Paolo plays live, his acoustic guitarist wouldn’t play what you see here in the video, the lesson is a one guitar arrangement.
Live, there are other instruments to take into consideration and the acoustic guitar becomes more of a percussive rhythm instrument in the mix.
However, when we play a song like this on one guitar we need to make the guitar as big sounding as possible, often imitating bass and drums more than guitar!
As you watch the video, notice how there are several different techniques used in order to achieve dynamics, tension and release.
Improvised strumming techniques
A few different techniques are used in the pattern:
- Full Strumming, all notes in a chord strummed
- Pick root note, strum upper part of chord
- 16th note strums
When building a strumming pattern like this you want to keep some parts improvised, other parts decided.
The syncopated 16th note strums on the upper part of chords need to be adjusted to the singers phrasing, keep it nice and loose, don’t rush these strums.
The difference between picking a bass note Vs strumming a whole chord is massive.
You should experiment with different types of strumming as you play the song yourself.
