Learn how to play Angel Eyes!
Angel Eyes is a jazz standard which use an almost chromatic version of the descending bass line in the minor blues format.
This creates a very sad background, so when moving to the M8′s II – V – I we get a serious dose of harmonic release.
Notice how the variation of the verse is chromatically moving from A down to Eb.
Every other time we stop at F#, move to Bm7 followed by E. Such a variation is key to keep this type of progression from sounding boring.
Using modes to accentuate sections
As we enter the M8 at 1:46 we move to the key of F, in relation to Am, F is Lydian.
By moving to the mode of Lydian chord we feel as if we move somewhere new.
The progression moves II-V-I in the key of F.
The combination of such a common progression with that it comes from a key change is an integral part to Angel Eyes success.
After a brief flirt with the key of E we get a smooth transition back to the verse in Am, utilizing E as the IIIx.
The serious solo guitarist should practice modes and arpeggios over this beautiful chord progression.
