Learn how to play Kiss Me!
The Intro and Verse of Kiss Me use this chord progression:
I – Imaj7 – I7 – Imaj7, this produces a worried sounding cyclic movement that contradicts the lyrics.
This concept keeps the interest up until the chorus enter with its: II – V – I – VI progression.
This chorus progression cause a harmonic release which in turn helps us feel as if the chorus “lifts”.
Notice how the very common pattern: I – VI – II – V actually does appear, but since the weight is on chord II, we don’t get the “heard it all before” feeling.
Keys and Roman Numerals
To just know the key signature will not get you far, on the guitar we should relate key signatures to shapes we see and what we hear to the roman numerals.
Using this approach, Kiss Me is in the key of C.
Playing the open position chords of C major we use a capo on fret 3 and end up being in the key of Eb.
Should any other instruments want to join in, that’s the key signature you are actually in.
As a guitarist, knowing the chord names of Eb major is in this situation irrelevant.
Use the exercises in Advanced Chord Progression to get better at this.
