The picking pattern for 'Hey There Delilah' is simple, it is the chord inversions that make it sound new.

Using a simple picking pattern Guru plays this in a claw comp style, Tom Higgenson use a slightly more home made version, reminiscent of the of the one in 'Blackbird', he flicks string 2 and 3 with his index.

For the purpose of learning the guitar as well as possible, try both techniques.
This will prepare you for both songs like 'Blackbird' (using an advanced "flick") and 'Tears In Heaven' (using the claw comp technique).

Claw Comping

Continuing on the concept of "claw comping", this very useful technique should be executed as precisely and with as little movement as possible.

Should you move onto latin inspired guitar, this technique will be integral.

The finger style basics e book has etudes that work on this technique, using a click and pushing the BPM, you can get your standards up very quickly.

As you practice this style of comping, make sure the movements of the right hand are as small, yet powerful, as possible.
