Prior to the home made album 'White Ladder', David Gray had little success as an artist.

But not giving up, even when he had been dropped by labels for almost a decade in various line ups, David Gray decided to make an album in his bedroom, only with the help of his drummer, Craig McClune, 'White Ladder' was a massive success for an independent album.

A total of 8 singles was released from 'White Ladder' which was followed up by touring with Dave Matthews band in America, Matthews even released 'White Ladder' on his own label.

White Ladder

At the time Gray started the recordings for 'White Ladder' he was seriously considering giving up his musical career, life on the road had finally gotten to him and depression started to kick in, his relationship was on the rocks and there was no money left in his life.

This is evident in the song 'Nightblindness' where David sings: "what are we gonna do when the money runs out, I wish there was something left to say".
He has later said: "I find it weird that people can relate to that kind of pain".

White Ladder earned Gray a Grammy nomination for "Album Of The Year" in '02.

Babylon is a great example of how as long as you make good music, there is always a way to success.
