Learn how to play Wonderwall!
Wonderwall’s chords don’t break any harmonic rules, the chords used throughout are all from the same key.
A clever variation is the II7sus4 chord which makes the II chord (usually a minor) into something neither major nor minor.
The opening progression: VIm7 – I – Vsus4 – II7sus4, is played without changing the top two strings notes, giving us a type of drone that ties the progression together.
This is necessary since the progression is a bit backwards. Should it had been in a different order, such as: I – VI – II – V, the top two strings drones would not have been as important.
Wonderwall chords as numbers!
By thinking of Wonderwall’s chords as numbers in relation to a key center it is much easier to remember and understand how this song is constructed.
Even though Wonderwall use a Capo and what you play will actually be in the key of F#m, think of it as in the key of Em.
For a guitarist, the shapes are more important than the actual notes.
Speaking of shapes, the Em7 chord played almost throughout is a combination of two shapes.
Can you see how the Em shape is combined with a Dm7 shape?
