Learn how to play Rewind!

In this guitar lesson we learn how to play Rewind by Paolo Nutini.

Notice that there are only open position chords used in this song if we place the capo on fret 2.

When playing on your own this is a good idea since you can get more open strings to bleed into different chords.

The verse starts off with a manipulation of the I chord, a play between major and sus2 is found on the fourth string.
When we enter the next chord of the verse, the IV chord, the same trick is applied.

Take the finger off the third string (the not is an A) and you get an open G string. Sus2 to major third when the A is fretted again.

Rewind Chord Progression

Simple chords are used throughout in Rewind.

Starting off with a classic I – IV progression we enter a chorus via bridge that use the IIIx and II chord.

The chorus use the progression: I V VI IV, the same as I’m Yours by Jason Mraz and No Woman No Cry by Bob Marley.

The M8 section cleverly reverse the bridge by first going to chord II (moving down from chord IV) then to chord IIIx.

Following this we see a VI chord with a classic descending bass line.

The second time around the M8 stops on chord V as well as it fades out in dynamics we create a lot of tension as the vocal goes: “more, more, more”.

This kind of technique allows us to drag songs out, as we repeat the chorus again it doesn’t feel boring, subconsciously you actually do want more!
