Wonderwall Guitar LessonLearn how to play Wonderwall by Oasis! 'Wonderwall' doesn't break any harmonic rules, the chords used throughout are all from the same key. A clever variation is the II7sus4 chord which makes the II chord (usually a minor) into something neither major nor minor. The opening progression: VIm7 - I - Vsus4 - II7sus4, is played without changing the top two strings notes, giving us a type of drone that ties the progression together. This is necessary since the progression is a bit backwards. Should it had been in a different order, such as: I - VI - II - V, the top two strings drones would not have been as important. Think in numbers! By thinking of the chords as numbers in relation to a key center it is much easier to remember and understand how a song is constructed. Even though 'Wonderwall' use a Capo and what you play will actually be in the key of F#m, think of it as in the key of Em. For a guitarist, the shapes are more important than the actual notes. Because of this, all Chordacus images shown below are as if played without Capo. The Em7 chord played almost throughout is a combination of two shapes. Can you see how the Em shape is combined with a Dm7 shape?
